  12. today announced the release of SmartPass 1.0 for NetWare.
  13. SmartPass is a NetWare Loadable Module (NLM) designed to
  14. strengthen the password protection of NetWare 3.11, 3.12,
  15. SFT III and 4.x environments.

  17.      Compromised passwords have become a serious source of
  18. security problems on the network.  "A networked environment
  19. is only as secure as the passwords employed by the users on
  20. that network. Even though an organization may require users
  21. to change passwords regularly, many users will routinely
  22. select passwords such as a spouse's name, a birth date, or a
  23. street name that are easily compromised by hacker programs
  24. and internal intruders," said Glen Boyd, president of e.g.
  25. Software, Inc.  ôSmartPass is able to identify weak,
  26. predictable passwords on a NetWare server. SmartPass can
  27. then be configured to expire the password or create a list
  28. of all identified weak passwords for the network manager."

  30.      "Simple, easy to compromise passwords are a threat to
  31. network security,"  said Ron Nutter, Director of Technical
  32. Services for 900 Support, Inc., a professional outsourcing
  33. services agency with offices in Lake Oswego, Oregon.
  34. "SmartPass will reduce, if not eliminate these types of
  35. passwords from the environment. SmartPass should be one of
  36. the first utilities you purchase after installing NetWare."

  38. Common Passwords
  39. ----------------
  40.      SmartPass comes equipped with 10 databases containing
  41. over 120,000 common passwords. Some of the databases
  42. included are:

  45.      - Computer Jargon
  46.      - Famous PeopleÆs Names
  47.      - Common First and Last Names
  48.      - Places around the Globe

  50. In addition, SmartPass utilizes algorithms to identify other
  51. common passwords such as blank passwords, common keystroke
  52. sequences, matching user names and passwords, and calendar
  53. dates.

  55. Customizable
  56. ------------
  57.      SmartPass allows the network administrator to customize
  58. different password scanning options. The administrator can
  59. enable or disable databases, scan "All Users" or
  60. "Supervisors Only", and schedule scans for times when server
  61. utilization is low. In addition, SmartPass offers real-time
  62. scanning options that initiate a user-specific scan any time
  63. a user changes his or her password, or a new user is added
  64. to the network. SmartPass also supports user-supplied weak
  65. password databases.

  67. SmartPass Protects Vulnerable Network Environments

  69.      With the use of dial-in servers, remote control
  70. packages, WANs, the Internet and remote node connections via
  71. modem, convenience has become key to an organization's
  72. productivity. However, this convenience makes networks ever
  73. more vulnerable to hackers and would-be intruders.
  74. SmartPass helps network administrators secure their networks
  75. by providing them an easy means of identifying and removing
  76. all weak passwords in the environment.

  78. Pricing and Availability

  80.      e.g. Software's SmartPass 1.0 for NetWare is currently
  81. available. It is priced at $499 per server. Through May 1st
  82. 1994, e.g. Software will offer SmartPass at a special
  83. introductory price of $299 per server. This includes a
  84. license for a single server and an unlimited number of
  85. workstations.
